CenteringPregnancy® Group Prenatal Care - Providence Midwifery

CenteringPregnancy® Group Prenatal Care

An innovative pregnancy care program, that gives you personalized care, great educational tools and a supportive group of other pregnant women, who like you, are traveling along the passageway into motherhood.

CenteringPregnancy® is an evidence based model that combines scheduled health assessments and expanded educational opportunities with a support group of pregnant women who are also going through similar physical, mental and social transitions.   It is a model of group care that integrates three major components: assessment, education, and support.

Patients will first meet with one of our midwives, Nuria Nelkin or Anna Cherry, who are committed to providing outstanding prenatal care in a way that empowers women who can then be advocated for themselves and their babies. After this meeting, the group will join together for learning and interactive discussions. These discussions will include an array of topics such as nutrition in pregnancy, genetics screening options, birth plans, breastfeeding and more.  Patients participating in CenteringPregnancy® have had significantly fewer preterm births than the national average.  Our patients say, “It’s an outstanding program that every mom-to-be should experience!”

How does it work?

Upon arrival, you will begin some simple self care steps taught to you by your midwife. These include checking your blood pressure and weight, and recording them in your personal centering notebook. You will then have some private time with your midwife. During this time you can review anything personal and discuss your individual progress.   After, you will join the group and begin interactive discussions and activities.

Who is in the group?

Your group is made up of 8-12 expectant moms, who are all due around the same time. Your partner/support person is welcome to join the group as well, and encouraged to do so. We know how valuable they are to your experience and have geared many of our topics to include things that they will find interesting and useful as well.

How much time does it take?

Parents-To-Be love the fact that Centering groups have pre-planned times and schedules. Scheduling in advance can make planning for work and childcare easier, and will allow you to get the most from each visit. Each session lasts about 2 hours and will be guided by your midwife.
